We are an area of breathtaking scenery, economic opportunity and down-to-earth friendliness.  Each of the towns in our county has all the advantages of an American small town, coupled with a location in the midst of acres of National Forest, freshwater lakes, and the beautiful Ouachita Mountains!  There is scenic beauty, mild climate, recreational opportunities (including 4-wheeling), moderate living costs, quality education, and quality health care.  When you add affordable land, housing, and a low crime rate, it's an exceptional place to live.

Explore the many hiking, biking, equestrian and ATV trails leading into our Forest.  Fish, golf, hunt, or choose a canoe or fishing trip.  Or check out our art, craft and antique shops.  And be sure to visit the Ouachita Little Theater.

The Ouachita River originates in Polk County, as do the Cossatot and Little Missouri. The Poteau and Kiamichi rivers also run through the area. It is the site of Fernwood Bog Natural Area, Big Fork Creek Natural Area, Iron Mountain Natural Area, Black Fork Wilderness, part of the Ouachita Trail, Shady Lake Recreational Area, Bard Springs Recreational Area, and the Wolf Pen Gap ATV Trails. The fifty-four-mile Talimena Scenic Drive, from Mena into Oklahoma, has been designated a National Scenic Byway.

We foster the opportunity to develop a business, raise a family, or retire.  Our area is open to progress, but seems to keep our down-home feeling.

We have the very highly rated Rich Mountain Community College which is a great stepping stone to further education, or gives many associate degrees.  They adapt to local needs, and give excellent, high quality education.

Our hospital, Mena Regional Health System, is continually improving, with some of the best doctors around.  It now has a Level 4 Trauma Center.

In the heart of the Ouachita Mountains, Mena is about 1-1/2 hours to Fort Smith (North), Hot Springs (East), and Texarkana (South).  The State Capitol of Little Rock is approximately 3 hours' drive to the East.
